Join Paul and Lorraine for a Mini-Wattle Hurdle Workshop and learn the traditional weaving technique used to create hurdles of all sizes! We will be using Willow or Hazel (when available) we coppice in Surrey to make our hurdles.
The finished hurdle will be suitable for use as border edging and will be 6ft in length and up to 2ft in height.
This workshop is suitable for adults only and should be avoided if you have severe arthritis or problems with your hands. You will be asked if you prefer to use Willow (easier on your hands) or Hazel (traditional material used) when booking.
This workshop is helpful if you are looking at creating sturdy continuous boarder edging too as the principal and technique is similar.
Full-day: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm (inc 1h lunch break)
NEW DATES COMING SOON

Spent the day making a hurdle. Paul was a very knowledgeable and good instructor. Hard work but really enjoyable and very happy with the end result.

We had a great time learning this age old craft! Paul was very knowledgeable and patient passing on little tips that he has learnt over the years in our process of learning this highly skilled craft. He made sure we all came away with a viable product and we learnt a lot in the process.
The sun shone too in the lovely wooded area at Birtley Art Space! Highly recommend Paul’s courses.

Enjoyed a lovely day at Birtley Wood. Greeted by a roaring woodland fire and a cuppa and cake to start the workshop. Very pleased with my finished dragonfly which will look great attached to a bare wooden fence. Hoping the birds may like the sphere to make a spring nest. Will be back!
Working with Lorraine and Paul at Hedges and Hurdles has been an absolute pleasure. They have both been adaptable to changing circumstances whilst still able to deliver the highest quality end product, whether it be training courses or contracted hedge laying.
We had a really lovely afternoon at this event. We were taught how to do basic willow weaving to make lovely, useful, bird feeders. Lorraine was a great hostess and teacher, generous with her time and expertise. The setting was relaxing and peaceful. I will be booking again soon.
