group of people celebrating

As we reach the end of August we have our first opportunity to talk face to face with the general public as we will be exhibiting at the Edenbridge & Oxted Agricultural Show, Lingfield, Surrey on Sunday 29th and Monday 30th August!

At the heart of this 2-day event, you’ll find close-up encounters with animals of all sizes – from farm animals to pets, poultry, horses, working dogs, falconry, ferrets, bees and bats!

Paul will be undertaking a Hedgelaying demonstration on Sunday, you will find us alongside other rural crafts in the Country Sports section of the showground.

As we move into September we have three more exciting events where we will be exhibiting, we welcome these opportunities to meet with like-minded people, to have some great conversations and share our display of Willow and other wood crafts we make in our workshops and training courses. We also enjoy undertaking demonstrations and welcome any questions you may have.

The first event in September is the Unusual Plant and Garden Fair at Sussex Prairie Gardens, nr Henfield. Come along and join us at this picturesque location on Sunday 5th September.

Paul will be undertaking a Wattle Hurdle making demonstration at this event and I (Lorraine) will be Willow Weaving!

The next long-awaited event is the Surrey Hills Wood Fair, as with so many events it was unable to take place last year. We are excited to join other fellow Surrey Hills Enterprise members to exhibit and again Paul will be undertaking a Hedgelaying demonstration too. This is a two-day event to be held in Cranleigh on 11th & 12th September. Get 25% off tickets by booking in advance!

Paul will be undertaking a Wattle Hurdle making demonstration at this event and I (Lorraine) will be Willow Weaving!

And finally, Zero Carbon Guildford is bringing the borough together to hold a climate festival as part of the national Great Big Green Week. Guildford community groups, organisations, and businesses will be showcasing the work being done locally on food security, environmental protection, and mitigation and adaptation to the climate and ecological crisis.

We are delighted to have been invited to exhibit our work at the grounds of Guildford Cathedral, Paul will be undertaking a Hedgelaying demonstration on Friday 24th September alongside our stand and I (Lorraine) will be undertaking workshops together with Ruth Wheeler on both Friday 24th and Saturday 25th September to promote Birtley Woodland Art Space, our shared outdoor studio located on the Birtley Estate in Bramley, Guildford. We will be publishing pre-bookable workshops early next week.

As I’ve already mentioned above some of our training courses it’s a good time to highlight two key experiences, Hedgelaying & Wattle Hurdle Making.

The desire to conserve and enhance our heritage hedgerows, undertake new (old) skills and spend time in the outdoors is on the increase. We would like to welcome you to join either a two-day Hedgelaying or Wattle Hurdle Making Course to include Coppicing (a traditional method of woodland management) and enjoy an experience that will stay with you for life!

Courses commence in October each year in line with the Coppicing season and continue through to March the following year. All courses are delivered by award-winning National and Supreme Champion and professional Hedgelayer Paul Matthews.

Hedgelaying is a management solution for overgrown hedges widely practised throughout the UK and Europe and is the key commercial activity we undertake during the winter months. A country craft that rejuvenates existing hedgerows by encouraging them to put on new growth, Hedgelaying improves the overall structure and strength of a hedge providing protection for crops and wildlife.

Wattle Hurdle Making, is an age-old practice of weaving cleft hazel rods through upright hazel rods. Hurdles are used as a rustic, practical and attractive alternative to modern-day fencing panels. During the training course, you will have the opportunity to make a panel or screen woven from Hazel and if you have room on the roof of your car you are welcome to take your finished work home!

We offer a wide selection of experiences for private groups, families, adults and teenagers of all ages and abilities. See our calendar of events link above for all published events to date.

Thank you for your continued support, it would not be possible to run our business without you, do come along and visit us at one of our events or make contact if you just want to chat or have any questions.

See you soon,

Lorraine & Paul
